We’re happy to discuss any event at any location, public or private, whether at an established venue or entirely off-grid. If you are planning an event, feel free to email us directly, or complete the Contact form above. We provide a sound experience, which includes the sound system and two performers (DJ and singer), as well as lighting, setup/takedown, pre-event consultation, etc.  Run by true music lovers and professionals, Pomegranate Hi Fi brings under-appreciated sounds to curious ears and dancing feet.

Who is The Groove Thief?

A dub and reggae connoisseur previously based out of Hong Kong, The Groove Thief [TGT] has been hailed as “among Hong Kong’s leading arbiters of musical taste.”  TGT has organized hundreds of events featuring local & international artists, including the influential Pomegranate club residency. As a selector, he’s supported numerous international artists including Cojie [Mighty Crown], Iration Steppas, Mungo’s Hi Fi, and Tippa Irie; in addition, he’s frequently performed at major Asian festivals like Clockenflap. He has independently released his Country Dub EP, dozens of mashups, and over 50 mixes – including guest spots for Bass Music China, Dub Temple Records, Dub.com, Monkey Radio, and NiceUp – while also maintaining a website dedicated to In-Depth Coverage of Underground Sounds, specifically dub, reggae, and local music: TheGrooveThief.com. An experienced, versatile, and well-regarded music journalist, he has written for Time Out Hong Kong magazine and covers the reggae scene for NiceUp. Since leaving Hong Kong, TGT has co-founded the Pomegranate Sounds label; here in Colorado he has already found a home at community radio statio KGNU and has also recently begun an exciting interview series: #TGTfeature. Years in the making, Pomegranate Hi Fi is his latest endeavor.

What is Pomegranate Sounds?

At its heart, Pomegranate Sounds is about friendship and continuing the legacy of the ever-eclectic Pomegranate club nights held at the famed underground electronic club, oma. Founded by The Groove Thief & ►►△, this fledgling record label is already flourishing in proper outernational style with two riddim-making teams hard at work in their respective labs in Colorado and Hong Kong. The label is staying busy with multiple planned releases – featuring legitimate vocal talent from around the world – on the horizon for 2017!

Why is it called a Hi Fi?

For several reasons, but primarily because Pomegranate Hi Fi is an active, or powered, speaker system. This increases portability and versatility, however, it is not hand-built in the original Jamaican Sound System tradition. In addition, we’d like to tip our proverbial cap to a pair of immense inspirations: the late great King Tubby – the famed dub originator whose sound system went by King Tubby’s Hi Fi – and an arguable leader of the current international sound system scene, Mungo’s Hi Fi. Respect!

Tell me more!

Of course. The sound system consists of strictly high-end QSC speakers, 6000kW in total, which are suitable for indoor and outdoor events with up to several hundred people. The Groove Thief primarily performs on Pioneer DJ equipment, while Scotty McD uses a Shure microphone. Our custom dub siren is available upon request.
